The Stockholm Archipelago is the largest of its kind in Sweden. The archipelago started to take shape 800 million years ago when the land rose from the sea. Today there are more than 30 000 islands, islets and skerries covering an area of 3,500 square kilometers. There are 6 200 larger islands and 24 500 smaller islands, islets and skerries. The archipelago stretches 150 km from Arholma in the north to Landsort to the south and 80 km from the Stockholm mainland in the west to the final outpost, Svenska Högarna, in the east. The Stockholm archipelago can be divided into three parts: The northern archipelago with Vaxholm as the hub, the middle archipelago with Strömkajen in Stockholm City as the hub and the southern islands with Stavsnäs as the hub.
This time we will explore the northern part of the Archipelago and finish the week end in Vaxholm. Vaxholm is a cosy little town with shops, galleries, cafés and a very lively in summer. The town of Vaxholm was established in 1558 by the King Gustav Vasa, the fortress you can see today was finished in the year 1863, it talk a long time to finish and the walls where then to thin to protect from the graneds used at the time.
